The slim line front seats provide generous legroom for those in the middle row too, where the outer pews can be moved fore and aft to create more space in the back while the middle seat has Volvo's clever built-in child booster. There's good headroom in all three rows, plenty of adjustment in the driving position with excellent vision and the front seats are super comfy in the Momentum and Inscription grades and super supportive in the R-Design, which features more side bolstering. With the exception of the Excellence variant, all XC90 models have a seven-seat configuration that offers decent space for all occupants. If you're after the full luxury experience, the Excellence is more of a high-riding limousine than a family wagon as it ditches the seven-seat layout and replaces the second-row bench for two individual adjustable chairs (complete with heating, ventilation and massage functions - just like the front) that are separated by a centre console which includes a chiller box capable of holding two 750ml bottles and comes with a pair of Orefers crystal glasses that fit neatly into the cupholders. The Inscription improves on the ambience with genuine Nappa leather trim and walnut cabin highlights while the R-Design brings a sportier character with more supportive front seats, a thicker-rimmed steering wheel, black headlining and aluminium dash highlights. There's a real sense of Swedish style in the cabin of the XC90, fusing a minamalist design featuring quality and natural materials with a clean and modern digital interface.Įven at the entry point, the Momentum's comfort seats (with power adjustment for both front occupants) are trimmed in leather, the cabin has four-zone climate control and there's clever storage spaces throughout. The high-tech T8 Inscription starts at $122,900 (plus on-roads), the R-Design costs $124,900 and the four-seater Excellence model caps the range at $174,200. The Inscription grade carries a $6000 premium for both variants while the R-Design costs $2000 more. Prices start at $93,900 (plus on-road costs) for the D5 Momentum, with the T6 petrol engine costing an additional $3000. The XC90 is available with either a twin-turbo diesel (T5) or a turbo and supercharged four-cylinder engine (T6) in three model grades - Momentum, Inscription and R-Design - while the flagship T8 plug-in hybrid combines the petrol engine with an electric motor and can be had in either Inscription or R-Design trim as well as a unique and uber-luxurious Excellence model. While it has been around for a few years now, as it was the first model in a revitalised line-up to be based on Volvo's modular platform that now underpins the S90 sedan, V90 Cross Country wagon, and the smaller XC60 SUV that has scored back-to-back victories as the Best Luxury SUV under $80,000 for the past two years in Drive's annual Car of the Year awards.
